“Bin Laden is dead!“ said ”Late Night” host Jimmy Fallon on NBC — “just like the Republicans’ chances in 2012.” Oh the late night comics had a field day pushing this idea the Obama now earned his reelection. Forgetting that Obama opposed nearly everything that brought Osama Bin Laden's body to room temperature, like the war in Afghanistan and the interrogation techniques used at GITMO that gave Obama the information he needed to carry out the raid, comics like Fallon joined together to declare the Republican party dead in 2012.
Let the celebration begin...
Not so fast. When I was in basic training, the first Gulf War was taking place. Operation Desert Storm began and ended in the eight weeks of my ultimate army test. One afternoon, the drill sergeants gathered the four platoons of Echo 2/46 into a room to watch the carnage of the M1 Abrams tanks in the desert. Drill Sergeant Danny Holman exclaimed George H.W. Bush was on his to reelection.
That's a bold statement coming from a man in uniform. Usually those types of statements aren't made in uniform, but how could you not say that. The first Bush celebrated huge approval numbers as America fought successfully to free Kuwait, and the spirit of America was lifted over the long days of Vietnam that brought it down and divided the country. You know what, I believed Bush was going to be reelected in 1991.
Of course, the timing of this is all too similar--in the spring before the year of the next presidential election. What was it that eventually led Bill Clinton to defeat Bush 41. Well it was the economy stupid. Bush raised taxes, and the economy stalled. Of course what is it Obama's itchy trigger finger wants to do? Raise taxes. Of course, Obama's record on the economy includes nearly $1 trillion in failed stimulus spending that didn't create jobs. Americans still face high unemployment rates.
So soon this will hype over Osama Bin Ladin will be over, and Obama will receive a bump in the poles. The economy will soon bring Obama back down to earth. The parallels to 1991 are just to great to ignore. So don't be discouraged by the late night comedians. Obama is beatable. He is weak, and all he has is war for a record, which is ironic to say the least.
