Congressman Billy Long Takes Over $40,000 From Special Interest in First Quarter 2011

Congressman Billy Long is like that Christmas present you get from your grandma. Regardless of how beautiful the wrapping paper and bows dress up the package, you know you probably aren't going to like what's inside. For Long, the wrapping paper included a shining endorsement from now US Senate Candidate Sarah Steelman promising Southwest Missourians Billy Long wouldn't be influenced by special interest groups.

I hope you will consider voting for Billy Long for Congress. The way I see it is we need someone who is not part of the political establishment. We need someone who loves his country and is willing to put his country before himself; before his party; before politics as usual; before special interest groups; before lobbyists; and before his colleagues in Congress. We need someone who will put YOU before money and power and influence.--Sarah Steelman July 28, 2010

Of course Billy Long placed bows on the packaging promising Southwest Missouri he wasn't going to Washington to scratch other peoples backs.

Oh, those words were so hopeful for all of us who were sick of the status quo in Washington. However, Long didn't deliver in this promise in his first three months in Congress. A report in the Washington Post shows the new generation of Congress who came to Washington riding the momentum of the Tea Party appears to have already sold out to special interest, including Billy "I'm not going to Washington to scratch other peoples' backs" Long.

Over 50% of the contributions Long received for his reelection bid next year came from special interest groups--many who don't have interests in Long's home district. Randy Turner did the math on The Turner Report. He writes:

Long received $78,517 during the last three months, with more than $40,000 of it that coming from either special interest PACS or lobbyists.

What was that you said Congressman Long?

That's what I thought you said. Fed up of Billy Long yet after all the lies and broken promises?
